All About Transition Moldings
Laminate & Wood Flooring Moldings
Quarter Round
Use quarter round to create a smooth transition from floor to walls. Ideal for tight spots like the toe space underneath cabinets.
Also can be used in addition to existing wall base if you do not want to remove it prior to installation.
Wall Base, Baseboard, Skirting
Wall base provides an elegant transition between floors and walls.
Typically 2.5"-3.5" in height, the shape varies slightly from brand to brand.
Reducer
Reducer strips provide a transition to other floors, usually floors with a lower height. They often work well on carpet.
Pergo makes two types, one specifically for carpet and one for hard-surfaces.
Some brands provide a trim track or mono-track metal strip that the reducer snaps into.
T-Moulding
The T-Moulding is used as a bridge between two floors of approximately equal height.
T-mouldings are typically used in doorways without thresholds or in L-shaped rooms or hallways were you want to change the direction of the planks.
Some brands REQUIRE a T-moulding in very large rooms (usually greater than 40x25) for added expansion gap.
Square Nose, End Moulding, End Cap, Baby Threshold, Universal Edge
This moulding has the most names ( and often the most uses)
Typically used at exterior doorways, around fireplaces, next to sliding door tracks, closets tracks, carpet, higher floors etc....
Virtually anywhere you need to create a finished edge, and wall base or quarter round will not work.
Overlap Stair Nose, Stair Nosing, Bull Nosing, Nosing
This moulding creates an attractive threshold and provides the proper overhang for a transition from one floor level to another, such as a step into a sunken living room or a landing.
Flush Stair Nosing, Grooved Stair Nosing, Stair Nosing
This moulding allows you to create a beautiful staircase. The stair nose provides a finished level lip for the tread while neatly covering the edge of the riser.
Trim Track, Mono-Track, Molding Track Etc.
Aluminum channel for use with Reducer, Square Nose, T-Molding and Step Nosing. Provides a secure attachment point for Transitions. The Track is included with the appropriate Pergo Brand transitions and is an option on other brands.
Wood Floor Moldings
Reducer Strip: a teardrop shaped molding. Used around fireplaces, doorways, as a room divider, or as a transition between Parquet and adjacent floor coverings that are thinner. Fasten down with adhesive or double-faced tape.
Threshold: a molding undercut for use against sliding door tracks, fireplaces, carpet, ceramic tile, or existing thresholds to allow for expansion space and to provide a smooth transition in height difference. Fasten to subfloor with adhesive and/or nails through the heel. Predrill nail holes to prevent splitting. Always leave expansion beneath the undercut.
Stair Nosing: a molding undercut for use as a stair landings trim, elevated floor perimeters, and stair steps. Fasten down firmly with adhesive and nails or screws. Predrill nail holes to prevent splitting.
Quarter Round: a molding used to cover expansion space next to baseboards, case goods, and stair steps. Predrill and nail to the vertical surface, not into the floor.
Combination Base and Shoe: a molding used when a base is desired. Used to cover expansion space between the floor and the wall. Predrill and nail into the wall, not the floor.
T-Molding: a molding used as a transition piece from one flooring to another or to gain expansion spaces. Fasten at the heel in the center of the molding. Leave expansion beneath the undercut on both sides.
